Loba :If you can’t be bothered to read through the looong post, there’s a summary of the picks by the three of us and simplified into a simple table as well.

Michiko to Hatchin

Airing date: 2008-10-15
TV station: Fuji TV
Animation studio:Manglobe
Plot Summary: Michiko is a free-willed “sexy diva” who destroys a supposedly inescapable fortress, while Hatchin is a girl fleeing her strict foster parents. The two join forces on an improbable escape to freedom.

Scamp: Right, Listen up. What’s going on here is that Manglobe have taken the crew behind Samurai Champloo (which Manglobe did, incidentally) and Cowboy Bebop including, most importantly, the music guy Shinichiro Watanabe. So the way it pans out is:

Cowboy Bebop=Jazz
Samurai Champloo=Hip-hop
Michiko to Hatchin=RnB

So what we have here is the third instalment to this kind of series. Bebop and Champloo are two of the greatest ever and this show is following in the footsteps. Hmm…ok look, if this show isn’t good I’ll eat my sock.

Loba: When I first saw the promo picture, I thought the kid was a young boy. I only got corrected when I watched the trailer here. The trailer looks good, animation is fluid and looks consistent and it isn’t kiddy or MOE MOE either with some rather violent scenes (no blood yet). Michiko’s bike reminded me of Gintama and his bike aha.

Brian: The moment I checked up on Michiko to Hachin, I was totally impressed with the great art style and the details of the promo drawings. Simply by judging this, this anime is very promising and obviously, there’s good odds that this title will be a good one. Moreover, it is Manglobe that will undertake this project and yes, if it turns out to be as good as Samurai Champloo, I’d say this is the one to watch for this season. Another thing to look forward to is Maki Yokowho will voice for Michiko. She’s quite a new seiyuu along with her counterpart, Ogo Suzukawho will voice for Hatchin. What is more interesting is that Miss Yoko here is quite a looker =) (p/s: Maki Yoko is an actress who once acted in The Grudge).

Hakushaku to Yōsei

Airing date: 2008-09-28
TV station:
AT-X
Animation studio:
Artland
Plot Summary: The story is set in 19th century England and centers on a “fairy doctor” named Lydia. Her life takes a 180-degrees turn when she meets a legendary blue knight count named Edgar and his crew. He hires her as an adviser during his quest to obtain a treasured sword that was supposed to be handed down to him by his family.

Scamp: Ok, my interest in shojo has dipped quite a lot in recent times, but even if it was high I wouldn’t watch this. It looks very corny and just not very good. Although I do have to ask why there haven’t been many anime set in 19th century England? Completely over-the-top dresses and waists so thin they make a CLAMP design look like they’ve just had a Christmas dinner; sounds like a perfect setting for an anime.

Loba: This series is apparently adapted from a series of light novels by Mizue Tani and Asako Takaboshi and into a manga series. I took a look at the promo video which is basically flashes of the characters to make the fangirls go wild. The studio,  Artland also did Gunslinger Girl II Teatrino which I didn’t manage to catch. I will probably not be watching this but this would be something light and fun for the girls to watch or any guys with interest…but not me. Next!

Brian:I have trouble looking for good shoujo animes out there but none had quite made a good impression on me. There is a good chance I give Hakushaku to Yousei a drop and to put things in perspective, find me a better shoujo anime than Honey and Clover. Only then, I’ll give that anime a watch. The selling point of this anime is the character design. Scamp claims that it is more like CLAMP-like though I believe it is the same shoujo design. Nonetheless, I admit that it looks great. Not forgetting is Nana Mizukiwho will voice for Lydia (main female protagonist). I bet on this one that Nana Mizuki will do the OP and even the ED for this anime. Another honourable mention here is Midorikawa Hikaru who will voice Edgar (main male protagonist). Who is Midorikawa Hikaru, you ask? Does Li Xingke rings any bell? How about Heero Yuy?

Toradora

Airing date: 2008-10-01
TV station: TV Tokyo
Animation studio: J.C. Staff
Plot Summary: Despite Ryūji Takasu’s gentle personality, his eyes make him look like an intimidating delinquent so he is utterly hopeless about his chances of getting a girlfriend anytime soon, and does not have many close friends either. After being greeted by his hungover mother in the morning, Ryūji goes to school and is happy to find that he gets to be in the same class as his best friend Yūsaku Kitamura and crush Minori Kushieda. However, it is then that he unexpectedly knocks into “the school’s most dangerous animal of the highest risk level” — Taiga Aisaka — who just happens to also be in his class, and is a good friend of Minori.

Scamp: I’m half and half about this. Originally I was sceptical because of how much it looked like Nogizaka Haruka, which is a pretty awful show. Then I found it it won some awards, so I got interested again. Then I read the plot summary and became sceptical again. And then and then and so on. Oh, Yui Horie is in it, who many people treat as some sort of goddess. I’ve never picked a show because of a voice actor though. My advice is: Don’t expect much and you may be surprised.

Loba: Same studio that is doing the nodame cantabile series. Yet another series adapted from light novels by Yuyuko Takemiya. Looks moe to me, if it’s your cup of tea, jump right in for a dose of comedy, romance and moe-ness. If it’s funny, I might watch it.

Brian:I don’t know why but I am always reminded of Shakugan no Shana whenever I look at Aisaka Taiga. Not so surpising is the seiyuu for Taiga is Kugimiya Rie. Try to guess who Kugimiya Rie voiced for before?

Hyakko

Airing date: 2008-10-01
TV station: TV Tokyo
Animation studio: Nippon Animation
Plot summary: This slice-of-life slapstick school comedy story follows the antics of four high school freshman girls, after they enroll into a huge private academy that teaches every grade from elementary school to high school.

Scamp: Can’t find a reason to recommend this. The director has worked on some good stuff like Azumanga and Death Note and there are some talented voice actors, but that’s me really trying to find something. Unless you REALLY like these type of shows I wouldn’t bother. Even a look at the japenese site and promo video does little to excite.

Loba: What gives?? This is the 3rd anime which is adapted from SOMETHING(manga in this case). The industry is sorely lacking in originality apparently. Looks like slapstick school life anime in the works. Pass.

Brian: Hyakko is expected to be the next MOE bomb in the fall anime season. Four high school girls. All fun-loving stories. Now add Hirano Ayainto the equation, Hyakko may be an anime worth watching. Too bad the character designs are not too moe but anything will do for now. Miss Aya will voice for Nonomura Ayumi. Others are Orikasa Fumikofor Kageyama Torako and Neya Michikofor Iizuka Tatsui. These names are experienced seiyuu in the business. I especially like Neya Michiko’s works who would normally voice for “strong” female voice. You know, those office ladies kind of voice.

Casshern Sins

Airing date: 2008-10-01
TV station:Tele Tama
Animation studio: Madhouse
Plot Summary:Cassern is about a cyborg who rises against the robotic armies that have subjugated all of humanity.

Scamp: Madhouse have 2 shows this year that it looks like they are putting their money into. They are Chaos;Head and this, Casshern Sins. My choice between the two is this by quite a considerable distance. It looks dark, exciting and epic! The animation looks far from standard and from the trailer the fights look fantastic. I’m definitely watching this, it’s second on my list, behind Michiko To Hatchin.

Loba: Watch the trailer if you haven’t. I have a feeling those who watched it will be divided into two camps, those who loathe it and those who love it. Disregarding the fact that it is  a remake of Shinzo Ningen Casshan, the background plot of the story sounds pretty cool. Humanity on the brink of extinction from being cyborgized, (sounds like Blame! to me) one cyborg to save them all.  The central theme will probably be about self discovery (like Xam’D Lost memories) since the main character, a cyborg, had lost his/its memories. Will shit hit the fan when he discovers the truth about himself or will he climb into a hole somewhere and rot? Watch it to find out. *Puts a tick on watchlist.

Brian: The only selling point for me here is that Cassern Sins is animated by Madhouse. That besides, I have no intention to follow this anime.

Yozakura Quartet

Airing date: 2008-10-02
TV station: TBS
Animation studio: Nomad
Plot Summary:The story revolves around a quartet of teenaged heroes: A super-strong girl named Hime, a mind reader named Ao, a conjurer named Kotoha and an ordinary, powerless boy named Akina. The three girls and Akina protect the city of Sakurashin from supernatural threats.

Scamp: Right, its the guy who did Kurenai. What Kurenai was was an excellently written piece of work with a rather boring plot. So instead of the boring plot, they put in this supernatural story thing. If it keeps the excellent writing from Kurenai then I think we might have a winner here.

Loba: Adapted from manga, when I first saw the title, I thought that it was going to be a group of 4 musicians forming a freelance quartet after confusing yozakura with yorozuya. Looking at ANN in bewildment, I realised my pre-assumptions were totally wrong (whew, not a nodame cantabile wannabe). I wonder what the plot is going to be about since it mentions supernatural as a genre. Is there going to be an overall plot or is it going to be like Darker like black with mini arcs taking the main stage until the end when the overall plot is revealed? The art is pleasing so I might just grab the first episode to see what it’s like.

Brian: After checking the promo site, I have a good feeling that Yozakura Quartret would be a good show to watch. Only if it is made into a shoujo anime. Then comes in the supernatural part, this one might either turn out to be Rental Magica (love the character design but not the story) or worse still, Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou. Though Nomad is a relatively unheard of but the character design alone gives me the impression that I should give this anime a try. It is not all too bad actually. Fukuen Misatowho will voice for Yarisakura Hime had already worked on many supernatural type of anime, which include DTB, DMC, and to a lesser extent, Rosario to Vampire. Yeah, whatever.

Shikabane Hime: Aka

Airing date: 2008-10-02
TV station: AT-X
Animation studio:Gainax
Plot Summary: The title “Corpse Princess” belongs to Makina Hoshimura, an undead girl who seeks to hunt down 108 corpses in order to go to heaven.

Scamp: It’s a Gainax action so obviously I’ll watch it. But I’m not holding out for a masterpiece here, it looks like it could be very cliche and occasionally rather dumb, even a quick look at the pictures I get from looking up this show suggest disintegrating clothes that weren’t that plentifulto begin with, just look atthe length of those skirts. It is Gainax though so you never know.

Loba: The moment I read the plot summary, I thought of Blade of the immortal. Okok, 1000 evil men is too difficult. Killing men is too easy. Let’s change it to 108 corpses instead. Why 108 instead of 100? Well, 8 is a lucky number! Both shows are adapted from manga but blade has a 11 years headstart. Gainax. SO WHAT? The plot is a ripoff, the animation is nothing special.I hope they are not going the way of the Gonzo and end up with inconsistent animation along the way.NEXT.

Brian: Oh wow! Gainax. That name alone would convince me enough to watch. I am entirely impressed with the character design but a leap from Gurren Lagann to something shoujo as Shikabane Hime or The Corpse Princess had me think twice to decide whether or not I’ll take on this one.

Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens

Airing date: 2008-10-04
TV station:Tokyo MX Network
Animation studio: A-1 Pictures
Plot Summary: An art student named Jin Mikuriya carves a statue from the wood of the Kannagi tree only to have the statue come to life in the form of a goddess, who has now taken over the statue. He and “Nagi” work together to destroy the impurities that are gathering in the town.

Scamp: I really tried to find a good reason to watch this and yet I failed. The plot summary basically tells us what happens in the first episode and nothing about what else might happen. Plus I just don’t like the look of that blue-haired main girl

Loba: A 1 pictures produced both birdy and persona trinity recently so this show seems a little off from their style lately. 3 gals + 1 guy = harem. LALALALA. Next.

Brian: I have enough of majou and hime in one day. Enough said.

Mouryou no Kou

Airing date: 2008-10-07
TV station: Nippon TV
Animation studio: Madhouse
Plot Summary: The story follows a series of bizzare murders of schoolgirls who have been dismembered and stuffed into boxes. The private investigator hired by a missing daughters mother joins forces with an antiquebook seller and others to unravel the murder spree.

Scamp: When I saw that I had put this in my ‘want to watch’ list I was confused so I checked it out. Then I found out not only did it have an interesting plot summery, it was also animated by Madhouse and to top it all off it had character designs by CLAMP. I went to put this show in my ‘want to watch’ list but I realised I had already done so. Chances are in a week I’ll go through the same process.

Loba: Ohhhh! The first mystery anime of the season and it’s produced by Madhouse. Yea, it’s adapted from the manga (I give up) too. The characters are designed by Clamp according to this video but it doesn’t look Clampy to me. Go check it out for yourself. Anyway, since it’s not going to be in terms of arcs like himitsu : relevations but more like crystal blaze, I guess this show will be s.l.o.w (lack of interest? There’s a trailer but it’s not even up at youtube). Considering the two shows I mentioned are being released at a similarly slow rate, I might just have to KIV them all together.

Brian: It is very interesting to see that CLAMP is behind the character design team for Mouryou no Kou. What is more interesting is how different the character design is as opposed to what CLAMP would usually go for (long, slender neck with long arms and legs and super thin body frame). What really sell this anime off, in my opinion, is the story itself. Dark-themed. Investigative intrigue. Supernatural bad-ass fun. Nothing can go wrong with this one.

Tytania

Airing date: 2008-10-09
TV station:NHK BS2
Animation studio:Artland
Plot Summary:The capital of the empire of Euria is attacked by the empire of Titania, a much more powerful enemy that controls a large part of the galaxy. The story follows a soldier who flees the Titania empire and seeks refuge with the rebellion force, that rose up since the battle.

Scamp: That does sound very good. Problem is that it’s plot summary is all it seems to have going for it. Artland made Mushishi and…that’s about it. The staff behind it don’t inspire confidence either.

Loba: Ahhhh, a science fiction animation which seems to have originality until I watched the trailer herethen did I realised it feels just like the gundam universe of Zeon versus the federation without the gundams. Big ships big guns, many MALE leaders in old victorian fashion. If not for the action, I would have thought this was a fangirl show. The plot looks pretty much boring with the focus on this particular traitor who defected? Uh huh, so we will get to see how the war turns out from his point of view. How interesting. Skip.

Brian: So we have the empire of Tytania (I believe they are the antagonist here, or is it the other way round?) and then the Euria empire. One guy changes side and the whole deal goes down to that guy. Hmmm… judging by the plot alone, I can’t say it got me all excited about it though they have quite a good line of cast ahead; Yoshino Hiroyuki and Kishio Daisuke to name a few.

Chaos;HEAd

Airing date: 2008-10-14
TV station: Chiba TV
Animation studio: Madhouse
Plot Summary:Takumi is a high school student. He is withdrawn and is not interested in 3D things. In his town, a mysterious serial murder case happens and people get panicked. One day, when he chats on the internet, a man suddenly contacts him and gives him an URL. He goes to the website and finds a blog image that suggests a next murder case…. On the next day, it really happens….

Scamp:This and Casshern seem to be where Madhouse are placing their money on this season. I am far more excited about Casshern, but this one still looks interesting. Its tough to decide what to make of it from reading about it, with it’s cute character designs and dark premise. I’m going to try it out at least

Loba: Initally, I read the plot summary and got real excited. Then, I went over to ANN to take a look and wondered if I ended at the wrong page. Nope, looks like the cute characters with 1 guy + 6 gals is in the story and the guy is a hikikimori as well (not interested in 3D things). If you ask me, the animation seems like a mismatch with the plot. After watching the OP, I realised that this show combined both violence and moe-ness. There’s a game for it too! It was on my watchlist for its plot but now…I will probably scrape it.

Brian: I really like the supernatural theme of the story. Kind of like the US drama, The Early Edition. Well, I don’t like that The Early Edition but I can see Chaos;HEAd would work much better. However it’s definitely going to be an episodic story-telling, whereby each episode tells a different story. The weird thing is that the moment I hit the promo page, all I saw was a cute girl with a HUGE blade of some sort. Now what THAT has got to do with the whole freaking story? Now the more I look up about this anime, the more it likens to Rosario to Vampire. At the end, I think this anime may not be as good as the title would suggest. The interesing thing here is that both of the main cast – Yoshino Hiroyuki and Kitamura Eri – had experience working together in Blood+ and yes, Blood+ was a good anime. Would Chaos;HEAd be any good?

Sequels

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season

Airing date: 2008-10-05
TV station:TBS, MBS
Animation studio: Sunrise
Plot Summary: Continuing the battle from season 1, Celestial Being have to rise up against the whole world as their enemy once more. However this time, a new nemesis awaits them. Will the world change in accordance to Aeolia Schenberg’s vision? Will Setsuna find the answer he seeks in his new 00 Gundam? Will the fight ever end? Argh!

Scamp: Loba and, to a slightly lesser extent, Brian have been bouncing up and down in their chairs in anticipation of this so I’ll leave it to them

Loba: If you have read all my gundam posts, you should know who I am.I AM GUNDAM! Enough said, I will be reviewing this the moment I watch it the moment it is released so stick around for the latest review on gundam 00! If only I know moonspeak..I can review this even faster.

Brian: Gundam 00 is obligatory. A must-watch. The sequel to wait for this season. As for the review, I’ll just leave this to Loba. He’s a better Gundam l33t than I am.

Nodame Cantabile: Paris

Airing date: 2008-10-09
TV station: Fuji TV
Animation studio: J.C. Staff
Plot Summary:The two music students now drive themselves and eathother to greater artistic heights, in Japan and now Europe. And also with all the mukya goodness.

Scamp:Why I will watch Nodame Cantabile: Paris: 1) Gyapo! 2) Obligatory Eiffel Tower shot. 3) To see if they ever decide to animate the entire orchestra in one shot, rather than just one person playing. 4) Possible reappearance of Milch! 5) The irony of the French speaking Japanese 6) I loved the first season. Hmm…any more? Oh yeah: 7) Mukya!

Loba: I loved nodame cantabile. I dare say it’s one of the first few animes that excite me despite the lack of shounen elements within. The characters are cranky and funny, the plot was decent and classical music never sounded better. Sure, some people have complained that whenever the orchestra starts playing, there’s nothing much to miss in terms of animation and plot which comes to a standstill which seems to defeat the point of anime BUT hey, this is a music-centric anime afterall so what’s there to complain?

Brian: I have been anticipating this for a long time. I’ve read the manga before (if you consider reading several chapters on and off as reading manga XP). I’ve watched the live action drama as well. And hell no, I’m not going to miss the anime. I’ll definitely put this one into my review list. There’s nothing to hate and there’s everything to love about this show.

Clannad After Story

Airing date: 2008-10-02
TV station: TBS
Animation studio:Kyo Ani
Plot Summary: A sequel to the recently wrapped anime based on the Key Clannad franchise. After Story is a path that opens in the original visual novel after all the other paths have been opened.

Scamp: Generally I despise melodrama so for me to enjoy Clannad as much as I did is quite an achievement by Kyo Ani. However this is cut down to half size I think so this means more melodrama (grr, bad) and less Tomoyo insulting women without them realising (aka: the good bits). I’ll still watch it though

Loba: I tried. I tried watching Clannad. I really did. But some things never change and this is one of them.

Brian: Not going to watch it in a million years!

OVAs

Hell’s Angels

Airing date: 2008-10
Animation studio: Madhouse
Plot Summary: The story follows a school girl’s descent into hell and her struggle to return to where she knows she belongs.

Scamp: So no it’s not about Bikers? Ok, it’s only an OVA but I have my reason for mentioning it here. It’s done by Madhouse and looks similar to Kaiba. Guess who did Kaiba? Madhouse! Guess who liked Kaiba? Me! Guess who’s going to watch this if anyone actually subs it? Me!

Loba: A sequel to the manga. I never read the manga, probably never will so uh, scamp will let us know more.

Brian: I’ve never heard of Hell’s Angel before, what more to even watch it before. ‘ll just leave this to Scamp.

Seto no Hanayome OAV

Air Date: 2008-11-28

Scamp: Ok, this isn’t out for quite a while but that doesn’t mean I can’t look forward to it, can I? Ok, maybe I should elaborate more. Seto is one of the funniest anime I have ever seen, if admittedly not the most intelligent. So long as this OVA doesn’t focus on fanservice (Which I doubt it will, the series had very little fanservice) this should be good!

Loba: All of us have different tastes. This doesn’t taste good to me.

Brian: It’s not fair for me to say that this is one lousy anime, given that I have never watched it before. Simply implying this, this is not the type of anime that I’m keen on watching.
